The STEM club event for Year 9s that took place on November 4th 2016 was a great success. The pupils really had fun working together on a very challenging task, which involved assembling, identifying the parts and their functions, and test – running a finished solar powered car.
The pupils were able to engage in developing invaluable skills which they might not have acquired had they not attended the event. Many of these skills such as teamwork, communication, independence, presentational skills and resilience will be useful to them in the world of work and beyond school.
Another important outcome was that the girls came out understanding the excitement and importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in their lives, and the career opportunities to which these subjects can lead.
Having the STEM event for Year 9 sets has helped raise awareness amongst students about STEM and in the longer-term might increase the uptake of triple science amongst these Year 9 cohorts.
