Music Curriculum Intent
Music is an international language that helps students to communicate in the culturally diverse world we live. Our music curriculum will provide an inclusive and supportive atmosphere where all students are free to explore their thoughts and feelings, developing their musical skills and a love of music regardless of their starting point. Through regular performance opportunities both in and outside the classroom students develop their self-confidence, creativity and resilience essential skills needed to succeed in the wider world.
We regularly sing as a way of building confidence, internalising musical sounds and develop playing skills in a variety of genres. Through improvising students will extend shape and develop musical ideas and through practical activities students will learn how to use staff and other relevant notations developing an understanding of scales, tonality elements and other musical elements and devices. Students will listen to a wide range of music from great composers and musicians. Our teaching will focus on theoretical and practical skills and knowledge showing that people from all walks of life use music as a way of communicating thoughts feeling and actions.
Music at Newland School for Girls aims to;
- All girls will perform, listen, review and evaluate music across a range of historical genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- All girls will develop music technology skills helping to explore creative intent and emotion.
- Learn to sing and to use voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
- Develop the confidence and resilience needed to succeed in the wider world.
