KS4 - Drama

Curriculum Intent

​

The Drama curriculum aims to provide students with an exciting and enriching experience of theatre. We believe that Drama is a powerful form of communication that fosters creativity, imagination, and personal growth. Through engaging in a range of practical and theoretical activities, students will develop a deep understanding of theatre as an art form and gain the confidence and skills to express themselves through performance.

Curriculum Aims

  1. Develop Practical Theatre Skills:

    • Acting: Develop a range of acting techniques, including voice, movement, characterisation, and improvisation.

    • Devising: Explore creative processes for devising original theatre pieces, from generating ideas and developing scripts to staging and performing.

    • Technical Theatre: Acquire basic skills in stagecraft, lighting, sound, and costume design.

  2. Enhance Critical and Analytical Skills:

    • Theatre Appreciation: Develop an informed understanding of different theatrical styles, periods, and genres.

    • Text Analysis: Analyze scripts, considering dramatic elements such as plot, character, language, and stagecraft.

    • Critical Evaluation: Evaluate their own and others' performances, providing constructive feedback and justifying their opinions.

  3. Foster Creativity and Imagination:

    • Encourage imaginative thinking and original ideas through a range of creative activities, including improvisation, role-play, and devising.

    • Develop students' ability to express themselves creatively and communicate effectively through the medium of theatre.

  4. Build Confidence and Communication Skills:

    • Increase self-confidence and self-esteem through performance opportunities and public speaking.

    • Develop strong communication and interpersonal skills, including teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication.

  5. Promote Personal Development:

    • Encourage empathy, understanding, and respect for diverse perspectives through exploring different characters and situations.

    • Foster resilience, problem-solving, and adaptability in the face of creative challenges.

Key Stage 4 Overview

  • Year 10: Focus on developing foundational acting skills, exploring different theatrical styles, and beginning to devise original pieces.

  • Year 11: Deepen understanding of theatrical concepts, refine practical skills, and prepare for the AQA GCSE Drama examination.
